Emily Howard is the heart, hands, and mind behind The Diggingest Girl*—the name of her print business, popular instagram account, and Etsy shop. Along with selling her work online, Emily shows her work throughout the year at print, art, and craft exhibitions from Michigan to Georgia. Emily was born in Vermont, raised in Kentucky, and educated at the University of Kentucky, where she received a BFA in painting. Emily went on to get her MFA in painting and her MAAE with K–12 licensure at the University of Cincinnati. She carves her blocks and prints her work full time in Erlanger, Kentucky.

This book is the most concise and instructional tool that one could ever purchase to learn the art of print making. I have tried to do this with college instructors and could not quite comprehend the process. This book is easy to read, provides step by step details, and totally fits with my learning style. I am grateful this amazing artist shared her knowledge and expertise, and hopefully I will move from novice to proficient in print making. The photo illustrations are beautiful and helpful!
This was a lovely addition to my carving library. The examples are clear and engaging.I was most excited to learn how to transfer inkjet images to my carving medium, but it didn't work for me. I use Speedy Carve. If I leave enough of an image on the SC, I have trouble carving through the very thin layer of glue/Mod Podge and paper fiber. It catches on my blade and pulls up. Perhaps this technique works better on lino with super sharp tools.The gallery and projects added to value of the book. These feel like worthwhile projects or entry points, not filler.The information presented has been a boon. I learned many new things. I've never taken classes on carving, so this was great for me. It filled in a lot of gaps and will make my life so much easier. I look forward to experimenting. I highly recommend this book.(I tried the jigsaw method of cutting apart a stamp for easier multi-color inking, then reassembling it to print. Here's the result.)
If you or someone you know wants a guide to starting block printing and learning about its magic, this is the book to grab. Every detail is laid out in beautiful pictures and well thought-out instructions. And if you don't already, do yourself a favor and follow her on Instagram.
I really enjoyed the tips offered in this book. She gives clear and easy to follow instructions on things like how to build a small, portable drying rack for your prints and offers advice on compositions, inks, and tools. I'm fairly new to printmaking, so this book has helped fill in some of the gaps in my learning. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in linoleum cuts.
Very informative from materials to techniques. Also had some talented printers and their work and how they did it. Love it.
